Second Life is trying to sift reality again. (I’m 1.57 m in shape editor but 1.73m if compared to a block.)
I don’t like this at all. In Second Life viewer, I’m suddenly “1.57 m tall” when in fact, I’ve carefully made myself 1.73 m as I am in real life. Why this matter is that I build to real life scale, religiously, and I’m good at it. I’m not altering measurements by the eye, I’m using the in-built scales to make my world match real life measurements. All of the sudden, a block measured 1.73 meters fits my avatar perfectly, but my shape editor claims I’m 1.57 meters.
Interestingly Firestorm says I’m 1.77 meters tall. So in Second Life viewer I’m close to a midget, in Firestorm I’m taller than I’m supposed to be. A whopping 20 cm difference, which is about the height of a human scull.
Sure, I can fit myself into a box and make sure I’m the right height, but it just unnecessarily confuses things.
People who don’t care about the measurements should be allowed to build whatever scale they wish at their whim, but those of us who like to build realistic scenes (as much as we’re shamed for it) would really appreciate a good systematic scale.
The numbers were out of whack before but a new viewer update corrected it for a while, now we’re back in chaos mode. Let’s hope it’s temporary this time, too.
