The Lover of Men, Kings and Gods, the Patron Saint of the Masculine – Since 2001

Ooh. I had an idea for those on Second Life who are nostalgic!

So, first, check your profile and copy the number of days you’ve been on Second Life. Paste that into your inventory filter, minus a day, and pick “Older Than”. It’ll show you the first 24 hours you’ve been on Second Life.

On my first day on Second Life, I went through the default avis, and picked Trixie, then combined it with Maria hair before hitting London Freebie Megastore.

This is a real first photo on Second Life, but maybe not from day one, but rather day two, from memory. (Checks… Yes. After I’d made changes to Trixie, mixing different default parts.) It’s at the Welcome area, or what’s it. Social Island, that’s it.

Monday, ‎3 ‎June ‎2019 – the second day of my second Second Life account on Second Life. Will be with you in a second. I second that.

This is me, once I got dressed so I felt myself in there:

Sunday, ‎9 ‎June ‎2019

This platform was my first build, too. I kinda liked it. Always had a thing for skyboxes and sky platforms… I must have bought my first parcel pretty fast. I remember first having a Linden Home but used the remaining 512 on a mainland parcel and then quickly abandonned the Linden Home, too. I’m sure I didn’t buy it the first day, but then, by June 9th, I’m sitting in my own sky platform on Zindra, so… (That’s Joking Dragon’s birthday btw…)

This isn’t my first avatar, however. I knew pretty much what SL was, how to build an avi, where to find free stuff, and the kind of thing, but my “taste” was very dated. I’d been away for 12 years – I did some early exploration of SL, even owned a bit of land in a place called Bellerieve, I think, a private island no longer there.

The first psychological WTF I remember a guy making a helpful comment about my looks. He said I should get a mesh head/body, as it’d make me look more refined. Another said I needed a better hair, and a third one commented on my skin. I got into an actual crisis over it. I suddenly understood so well what women who get comments about the way they look go through. It was awful. I have always been lucky enough to not get a lot of negative comments, if any, but boy did I get a crisis.

It wasn’t so much that the comments were insulting, because they weren’t. They were helpful. “Yo, newbie, there’s better stuff out there.” But I had NO IDEA. That was the worst part. I had no idea I looked like crap. 😀 I hadn’t yet found massively popular places where I’d seen perfect mesh avatars, and the last I looked at SL, I looked fabulous by comparison to my old avi.

He gave me body dysphoria on ‎10 ‎June.

My last photo in that avatar is from Monday, ‎10 ‎June ‎2019.

And my first in my new body…

My first photo in my new body… on Thursday, ‎13 ‎June ‎2019

So it took me 3 days to hunt down what mesh body and head to use. I remember the head being especially difficult to choose. I didn’t want to splurge the Catwa-moneys, so I found something else… But I liked it, it was a nice head. Only, it wasn’t bento. Bento was already a thing, but this one had a static face, a nice face- but it did neither smile nor open its mouth. And the latter especially becomes problematic fast. :p

By the way, the avatar complexity of this oldie is nearly 116 000. My current, way more sophisticated one is rarely, despite what I wear, over 60 000.

What else did I get up to?

Also, on the first day, I picked up the avatar Teddy. I remembered him from my older avi and felt like I met an old friend.

Teddy, the avatar.

I have an “incomplete” copy of Biddy, the most default of default avatars of 2019ish. The folder is named “incomplete,” so I wonder what the point was. I guess I saved items I liked? The jacket is in there with the tablet and body parts, no dress or mesh body, which I find weird.

What I do find is that I’ve saved all female default avatars’ hair objects separately. I remembered at the time, finding good hair was a task and a half, so…

Challenge 1: Quick update: Simply add mesh.

Do you have a copy of your first avi? Can you recreate him/her? If you add your mesh avatar + shape under your System, what do you look like?

My first avi + Mesh head and body.

Challenge 2: Using only the items you have left from day 1….

So we didn’t know how to use texture HUDs, pick skins, hair, or how to use alphas – put together the best avatar you can out of stuff you picked up during your first 24 hours… XD

You could maybe also use the Library you had available to you, but I chose to limit myself to items I saved on Day 1. (That said, I had the advantage of already having had an account before… My older avatar had NOTHING except gestures still there, but I might have cleaned up something. It is plausible tho that she had nothing, as I recall not having any idea what to do or where to go… But… I must have worn SOMETHING?!) Still, with my current avi, this is what I could have put together:

The best I could have. Not what I did.

Now, I think that’s all the nostalgia I can stomach for one day, hopefully soon, I can see yours.

Put your link in the comments so I can see what you got up to in your first day on Second Life!
