I resized my avatar the 20% height increase expected for an “average Second Life avatar”

I can’t even. Second Life scale is an endless source of GAAAWD, STOP! So I’m a pretty tall girl in real life. 1.73 meters, which makes me 5 feet 8 inches. Not INSANELY tall, but tall. But I never had to feel like I’m not tall enough, but I often felt I’m too tall. (A global adult woman’s average height is 1.65 meters, about palm width less than my height.) I put on heels, and 85% of men are shorter than me. On Second Life, I’m in the dwarf category; I think I’ve been kicked from a sim at least once for being a child.

So just out of curiosity, I sized myself to match the expected 20% boost in height to match the scale of other women. (Main image.) You can see me standing next to… Not an average-height male, who is 1.70 meters, but a 6-foot man, a man of 1.83 meters.

Oh, don’t I look cute, feminine, and so, so, very realistic? Don’t you just want to see me on the runway with other tall girls?

I’m just saying… There IS no scale on Second Life unless you make it so. The sliders don’t guide you to make an avatar by eyeing out “I’m just a shorter than average, so 86 should do as a value.” It’s not 86% of the average human; there’s quite a bit of room for monsters and gigantic demons in that scale.

Now let me go hang out somewhere with people around, see how I blend in… Adding 20% to your height if you’re 1.55 m in real is probably not an issue… But 20% to 1.73 is starting to be a bit rough to look at.

If avatars were scaled down to realism, furniture creators would have to adapt. NOT the other way around. They create what people will buy. As for the old stuff you’ve already bought, you can adjust the animations down, especially in your favorite pieces. And if the furniture would be a little more consistent with sizing, it’d be possible to easily swap animation packs between pieces. We could use the furniture we like with the animations we like. (We can now, too, but it’s just a much bigger hassle. About 20-50% bigger, to be more specific.)
